our story

In 2023, following a pilot program, Bikes Mwerre was born: a local, dedicated program to serve the Mparntwe community. The program is based in Alice Springs and delivered in partnership with schools and organisations throughout Central Australia. Our aim is to grow our reach and expand our impact, allowing as many communities and young people access to our workshops, programs and bikes as we can. We will do this by continuing to follow a community led, place based model of delivery which ensures that our programming is meeting the needs of the participants.

The program begun, because of a Larapinta father suggesting that the community needs a bike program and from there a partnership developed with the Larapinta Child and Family Centre and Bikes Palya (Bicycle SA). This partnership established a 2 year pilot program which enabled the foundations of cycling, a love of bikes and child, family and community relationships to be built. Since this pilot program and the establishment of Bikes Mwerre out of that pilot, we have been able to support young people and communities build bikes to keep, equip them with basic bike mechanic skills and provide them with opportunities and activities that might otherwise be out of their reach.
